Brown rot fruit rot is characterized by a powdery appearance because of the numerous tufts of tan to gray spores. The rot begins with a circular, light brown spot that develops within days to a soft rot of the entire fruit. The rotted fruit often hangs on the tree and dries to form a shriveled "mummy."
